How to Install an Outdoor LED Sign Yourself (No Electrician Needed)

SankaSigns Team2 min readMay 20, 2026

One of the biggest myths about outdoor LED signs is that you need a professional installer. You don't. Our signs are designed specifically so that any business owner with basic handyman skills can get one up and running in a single afternoon — no electrician, no sign company, no $5,000 installation bill.

Here's exactly how it works.

What You Actually Need

  • A standard 110V–240V power outlet (same as your HVAC or refrigerator)
  • A mounting surface — wall, pole, or existing sign structure
  • A drill and basic hardware (mounting brackets are included with your sign)
  • A phone or laptop to set up the content management app

That's it. No conduit. No electrical panel work. No permit for the electrical connection.

Step 1 — Choose Your Mounting Location

Pick a spot that faces your highest-traffic road or parking lot entry. The sign should be visible from the direction most of your customers come from. For most businesses, this means mounting it near the road-facing edge of your property at eye level from a car — roughly 8–12 feet off the ground.

Step 2 — Mount the Cabinet

Your sign ships with mounting hardware and brackets. Use a drill to secure the brackets to your wall, pole, or structure. The cabinet slides or bolts onto the brackets. Two people makes this easier for larger signs — one to hold, one to bolt.

Step 3 — Run Power

The sign uses a standard power cable. Run it to the nearest outdoor-rated outlet. If you don't have an outlet near your mounting location, a licensed electrician can add one for $150–$300 — still far cheaper than full installation by a sign company.

Step 4 — Connect to WiFi and Set Up Content

Power the sign on. Download the content management app, connect to your sign's WiFi network, then switch it to your business WiFi. From there you can upload text, images, and video directly from your phone or laptop. Your first message can be live within minutes.

What About Permits?

Electrical permits are typically not required since you're just plugging into an existing outlet. Sign permits vary by city and zoning district — check with your local building department before installing. Many cities have straightforward sign permit processes that take a week or two.

Bottom Line

If you can hang a flatscreen TV, you can install one of our signs. The entire process from unboxing to first content playing is typically 2–4 hours. No professionals required.
